Cidade capoiera

Now a street dance and an expiatory and popular festival, capoeira was born at the same time as Brazil. Known as “N’Golo” at that time, the dance drew its source from the camouflage of a liberation struggle of slaves, an exercise intended to deceive the oppressor. Laurence Méhaignerie visits the emblematic cities and meets the masters of the capoeira academies.

In the rainy, nocturnal or sunny landscapes of Santa Lucia, Salvador de Bahia, or Rio de Janeiro, each city in the country seems to have its own capoeira academy. The masters teach there the art of deception, the “malandragem”, and the vivacity of the movements of a dance that is both aggressive and reconciling. “You must enter the circle with your heart open”, says master Rafaël, a teacher in Rio. Master Marrón, Master Jao Pequeno, and Master Nestor, a former war minister and a capoeira artist since the 1960s, explain the pacifist philosophy and the way of life of their discipline. On the circular track, men, women and children give themselves up to the grace of the inoffensive struggles “without cups or medals”. They offer brilliantly danced duos where the physical feats hover between attacks and embraces. “It’s like the game of love”, says a dancer during this documentary tracing the history, customs and topicality of this ancient discipline.
