Concept and staging Johanny Bert - Choreography Yan Raballand

“Krafff” is an unusual pas de deux between a dancer and a great paper figure manipulated by four actors. Twisted, knotted, sculpted, the paper comes to life and becomes an astonishing partner. Each tames the other. And there they are, swept along together in a playful and fascinating duo.

This show was presented during the danced conference “Où est Nikolais aujourd'hui?” proposed by Dominique Rebaud and Dominique Boivin at the National Centre for Dance in Pantin in February 2011.

Raballand, Yan

Following his training at the La-Roche-sur-Yon Conservatoire, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse, Lyon, Yan Raballand followed parallel career paths as an eclectic performer and as a choreographer. He has worked alongside choreographers such as Stéphanie Aubin, Dominique Boivin, Odile Duboc, Bernadette Gaillard and Pascale Houbin. He was also invited to choreograph for the Ballet du Rhin and Jeune Ballet of CNSMD, Lyon. In 2002 he moved the base of his company Contrepoint to  Clermont-Ferrand, and with it produced various works including  “Ici et Là” in collaboration with Sylvie Giron (2006), “Grün”(garden première in 2006, stage première in 2008) and “L'Ange”, a solo for himself (2008). He has also collaborated with many directors, including  Stéphane Auvray- Noroy, Éric Massé, Charly Marty, Johanny Bert, with whom he created “Krafff” (2007), a duet for a dancer and a marionette and Laurent Brethome with whom created "Bérénice" in 2011. In 2010, he created "Viola" during a rehearsal residence in Dijon (France), then "Bics et Plumes". His work is based on musicality, choreographic composition and how one relates to others.

Bert, Johanny

After training as an actor in the workshops of the Comédie of Saint-Étienne and as a puppeteer with Alain Recoing at the Théâtre aux Mains Nues, Johanny Bert worked with a variety of companies, in particular the Théâtre Archimage / Guy Jutard.

In 2000, he founded the Théâtre de Romette Company so that he could develop his own projects. The first show was a solo show using modelling clay. For each of his creations, he works hand-in-hand with a team composed of actors, visual artists, technicians etc. and, regularly, guest artists: Philipe Delaigue for the Opéra de Quat'sous (The Threepenny Opera) by B. Brecht/K. Weill, Yan Raballand, choreographer, invited for the creation of Krafff.

Concurrently to his creations, he implements artistic research laboratories, to which he invites creators: Richard Brunnel, director, Emmanuel Darley, author, Jean-Michel Coulon, director, Raphaël Fernandez, actor, Judith Dubois and René Delcourt, visual artists...

He punctuates his personal work by participating in the projects of other artistic teams as an actor or as the director (Peau d'âne (Donkey Skin) / Nosferatu Company, The Bang Bang Circus, une nuit sur terre / Le pied sur la Tête Company). He provides his services for shows /requests (Town of Riom: Ceux d'en face, The Comédie of Clermont Ferrand: Ceux qui sont perdupaumés, the Montluçon National Centre for Dance: Mélodrame Alphonsine). For the 2009/10 season, he integrated the artistic collective of the Dramatic Arts Centre in Vire, where Pauline Sales and Vincent Garanger invited him to participate in the artistic enquiry “Une femme est-elle un homme comme les Autres ?” and to direct les Orphelines, a text by Marion Aubert.

From January 2012, he will be the Director of the Centre dramatique national de Montluçon - Région Auvergne.

Western classical dance enters the modernity of the 20th century: The Ballets russes and the Ballets suédois

If the 19th century is that of romanticism, the entry into the new century is synonymous of modernity! It was a few decades later that it would be assigned, a posteriori, the name of “neo-classical”.

In all the arts and here especially in dance, the artist sometimes creates to defend a cause, to denounce a fact, to disturb, to shock. Here is a panorama of some "committed" choreographic creations.

Meeting with literature

Collaboration between a choreographer and a writer can lead to the emergence of a large number of combinations. If sometimes the choreographer creates his dance around the work of an author, the writer can also choose dance as the subject of his text.
