Der Grüne Tisch (La Table verte, solo de la mort)
Outside Germany, this legendary work The Green Table is only very rarely revived internationally. Thomas Caley, an interpreter with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in the 1990s, took up the challenge of delivering an interpretation of it, based on the transmission entrusted to Karin Hermes that relies on the Labanotation prepared by Kurt Jooss himself in the Laban notation system.

Jooss, Kurt
(1901-1979)
A natural leader and independent thinker, Jooss (1901–1979) helped develop what is now known as German Tanztheater, an expressive dance style that combined movement, text and drama. For Jooss, movement and words were inextricably linked; their connection was key to making performances as powerful an experience as life itself. Unlike expressionist choreographers of his time whose dances spoke to emotional themes, he sought to reveal the fallibility of the human condition. He created dances about urban alienation, social injustice and post-war trauma.
Born near Stuttgart, Germany, Jooss grew up studying piano, voice and drama but was drawn to dance from an early age. In 1919, he met Rudolf Laban, who was creating mass movement choirs danced by both professionals and amateurs, including Jooss. Although he had little dance training, he became Laban's student and choreographic assistant. That same year, Jooss presented his first evening of dance, "Two Male Dancers", with fellow student Sigurd Leeder, who became his longtime collaborator. Soon after, Jooss started his own company and created stage works for trained dancers. In 1927, he began his tenure as the first head of the dance department of the Folkwang School in Essen, Germany, which he co-founded that year. After WWII ended, Jooss returned to Germany and resumed his position as dance director of the Folkwang School, and he remained there until 1968.

More information
Hermes, Karin
A choreographer and dancer, Karin Hermes also specialises in the notation and analysis of movement. With her company hermesdance, she is working on a choreographic approach to essential human issues.
In her creative process, she experiments with deconstruction, collage, citation, and a variety of choreographic materials. Her works take their origin from a dialogue with the choreographies re-transcribed from the 20th century. Karin Hermes trained at the Zurich Ballettakademie and the New York School of American Ballet. She also studied dance instruction at the Cologne Musikhochschule. She specialised in analysis of movement and Labanotation at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse in Paris. Karin Hermes’s company is based in Bern (Switzerland). In 2008, hermesdance performed in Israel, France, Germany and Switzerland, and Karin Hermes was invited, among other venues, to the Centre national de la danse in Pantin, to the Centre chorégraphique de Nantes (in collaboration with the Carnets Bagouet), and to the Freie Universität Berlin.
Centre national de la danse, Réalisation
Since 2001, the National Center for Dance (CND) has been making recordings of its shows and educational programming and has created resources from these filmed performances (interviews, danced conferences, meetings with artists, demonstrations, major lessons, symposia specialized, thematic arrangements, etc.).

The committed artist
In all the arts and here especially in dance, the artist sometimes creates to defend a cause, to denounce a fact, to disturb, to shock. Here is a panorama of some "committed" choreographic creations.

Meeting with literature
Collaboration between a choreographer and a writer can lead to the emergence of a large number of combinations. If sometimes the choreographer creates his dance around the work of an author, the writer can also choose dance as the subject of his text.
